3dr Solo Quadcopter gopro

Although commonly referred as "drone", these aerial machines are also often called UAVs, unmanned aerial vehicles. Here's a quick walkthrough of how drones work.

Drones are really quadcopters, which have four rotors that can fly as high as 55 feet. They can be controlled remotely using an app that can send an emergency call, find birds in the area, or photograph distant subjects.

They could be seen as a sort of a toy or to be a practical piece of aviation technology. But also as a safety net, helping the police, fire service and military find out where crime and emergencies are happening.

Drones can be controlled remotely, often from a smartphone or tablet. They can take pictures or video, record short videos and listen to recordings of people's conversations, surroundings or movements.

Drones are made of many different things. From plastics to batteries to electronics to transmission systems usually make up a typical drone. The main elements that make a drone fly are propellers, motors, electronics and flight controls.

Radar Location

Most drones are equipped with some form of Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS).

Many have GPS modules built in, but some, like most drones, are also equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) and/or a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).

The GPS, in particular, allows a drone to accurately navigate through the world's terrain, and the GNS gives the drone a way to connect to cellular networks.

While a consumer RC may have one or the other, a pro RC typically has both. Most flying platforms like quadcopters, ultralights, hexacopters, drones and similar flying machines all have one or the other.

Autonomous Flight Mode

GNSS technology enables a drone to carry out autonomous flight which can be activated by basic commands in the computer.  And it is this tech that allows a drone to have a Return-to-Home (RTH) ability.

Because in this flight mode it does not need to be connected to an electronic control unit (ECU) on board the drone or GPS device. The ECU manages and controls the flight dynamics and to achieve safe flight the drone has to take into account the predicted GPS coordinates.

Rotors

A drone relies on rotors for its vertical motion. Drones have two main rotors: a drive (lower-mounted) rotor that guides the drone through the air, and a stabilization rotor (upper-mounted) that makes it stable in flight.

Flight stabilization

Gyroscopes, described below, help steady the drones when flying. Drones also use GNSS positioning to correct for realtime navigation errors, the result of wind and drift to maintain a stable hover.

Gyroscopes

These are the most elemental of the range of sensors that make up a drone. They are generally inexpensive – and, therefore available in most drones – but play an important role in the navigation systems of all such flying machines.

Gyroscopes measure the pitch, yaw or roll of drones in flight, and when integrated with other sensors, enable stabilization in virtually all drones.

Popular Drones

Hobby drones form a large part of the global marketand so do a host of smaller, low-cost drones from different manufacturers.

Most of these provide great night vision but at little or no cost. However, cheaper entry-level drones can be a bit hit-or-miss when it comes to particular features.

There are a number of companies that sell consumer drones, but the most popular and best drones are made by DJI, Potensic, Holy Stone, Parrot and Altair.

Specialization of drones continues grow and you can buy drones for fishing and also underwater drones from popular brands.

Whether you are a beginner, an enthusiast or a seasoned drone pilot, finding the best drones under 500 dollars can leave you in a tight spot. With so many to choose from, it can be difficult making a decision that’s worthwhile. For many, drones are simply a past-time that grows into a fruitful hobby. For others, drones are a brilliant way to tap into the world of breathtaking aerial photography and videography. Whichever one you are, it is likely that you are always looking into the latest in drone technology. At the same time, flying drones isn’t the most affordable hobby. And with the constant possibility of crashing into trees and nearby buildings, it is only natural to be reluctant to invest in the hobby.

Nowadays, however, drones are becoming much more popular and, as a result, less expensive. It’s not uncommon to find very good drones under $500 on the market, and they are usually of high quality. You can still enjoy the thrilling features of high-tech drones while sticking to a reasonable budget.

If you are interested, we also have an exhaustive drone buying guide for beginners, along with posts on best underwater drones and best drones for GoPro for your easy reference. And a simple and quick guide on how do drones work. Also, if you are looking for more options in a lower price range you can head over to our listing of the best drones under $300.

But let's come back to our current list. Choosing from a list of drones under $500 also means that you’re not losing too much when the inevitable crash happens. This guide will give you some of the best options to choose from.

What You Should Know About Drones Under $500

Getting a drone under $500 is a good middle ground between lower level drones with minimal features and flimsy hardware, and high-end drones worth thousands of dollars. In this price range, you can expect a drone that comes fitted with some of the best technology and hardware you can buy, despite its price. Though fairly affordable (as far as drones go), $500 is still enough to get you a flying machine that you can be proud of.

These drones include impressive features, going as far as offering HD camera quality, extensive flight time (generally 20 minutes and over), intelligent flight modes, GPS-based navigation, super steady hovering capabilities and, with many of them being racing drones, high speeds. A majority of them are also ideal for beginners, and come in sleek, light designs and styles.

Drones within this price range also go beyond the basics. If you are a fan of features like auto-return and TapFly control, there’s no shortage of that with these drones. For beginners (and even hobbyists), there’s still the option of getting a drone with obstacle detection and avoidance within this range. And for photographers or videographers in particular, you don’t have to worry about compromising on drone camera quality. Many of these drones include added camera stabilizers, beautifully bright picture quality, and wide-angle lenses that produce stunning shots.

How to Choose a Drone in this Price Range

This list presents quite a versatile price range. A hobbyist or enthusiast wouldn’t have much trouble finding a suitable drone within this range, but because of how easy it is to control some of the quadcopters (even in windy conditions), they can also be ideal for a beginner. The lightweight options are particularly appropriate for beginners who can’t be bothered with registering their drone with the FAA.

If you are seeking drones on a lower budget, you may want to look up our round-up of best drones under $300. And an extensive drone buying guide for beginners to go with our drone buying lists.

But for now let's dive in to the collection of best camera drones under 500 that you can buy in the market.

UUVs are basically a miniature submarine with no human occupant. Due to the fact that it is tougher to send radio signals through water as compared to air, such drones can’t always be operated well using wireless remote controls.

Underwater drones usually are largely autonomous, navigating with sensors and onboard computers. According to the Bard Center for Study of the Drone, underwater drones have been in operation since the 1950s.

Whether your interest lies in fishing, underwater photogaphy or even if you are a general enthusiast you will find something interesting the selection of best underwater drones below.

Quick Tips on buying the best underwater drone

For the videographers, drones have evolved as a necessity. UUVs are invading the market and they’ve become a must-have tool for the filmmakers.

Nowadays, it is hard to imagine a videographer without a drone. The new underwater drones help in performing several operations that let you explore the seabed in an easier way.

Here are a few factors to consider before buying a drone:

Price

The cost of owning an underwater drone is gradually getting competitive and high due to their increasing demand.

Nevertheless, you can get the best drones at an affordable price if you choose quality over quantity.

Warranty

Few drones have warranties that cover a fixed period in case the user is not satisfied with the purchase or the machine breaks down.

These drones offer you value for every penny that you spend.

Durability

The battery duration of the drones varies from one manufacturer to another and the same is true for efficiency as well.

Make sure you choose drones that promise strong battery and enhanced efficiency.

Wired or Wireless

While there are still many drones that use wires and tethering to conquer the challenge of transmitting signals underwater, there are many that don’t.

Experts recommend wireless drones if you have the affordability to own them.

Maintenance

Drones that are easy to clean and easy to use are certainly better than drones that have a complex procedure for maintenance. Research the maker’s instructions before buying one.

Sensor, Camera Lens & Storage

The ultimate motive of using a drone is to capture the best moments and later on be able to view in HD.

Now what if your drone has limited storage capacity? You wouldn’t be able to view the best scenes due to lack of adequate storage.

Purchase underwater drones with sensitive and sharp sensors, an extremely sharp camera and massive space for storage.

Dive depth

This is a no-brainer. In case of an underwater drone, the farther it can travel underwater, the better it will perform. Check the dive depth before buying.

So, the above mentioned key aspects should be considered before you order your first-ever underwater drone. Making facile decisions can lead to costly mistakes.

Popularity of Underwater drones

It is a lesser known fact that drones are hard at work in the oceans of the world and they’re a widely used type of vehicle that service a wide range of commercial, military and scientific needs. Here’s why they’ve become so popular:

Best Drones Under $300 - Buying Guide

Here are few essential features to consider to help you make an informed decision when buying a drone,

Note: This is extracted from our longer, drone buying guide for beginners

Battery life

If you choose the best models, the maximum flight time in between charges rarely exceeds 30 minutes. While you can always carry extra batteries, don’t forget to factor in the cost of spare batteries when calculating the total cost.

Range of flight

The flight range usually varies from 30 meters/100 feet to one kilometer or more. The quadcopters that are meant for beginners usually come with a short range and it perfectly suits the novices who just wish to use it inside an apartment or an enclosed place.

Flight Time

Majority of the models come with a flight time that ranges between 10-15 minutes post which you require either replacing your batteries or recharging them.

The costlier models usually have longer flight time of 15 minutes. In case of increased shoot time, try to buy a costlier model and buy a spare battery.

Speed

In the features of a quadcopter, it is most unlikely that you’ll get maximum speed of flight but in case you can settle with light-weight models that don’t have too many accessories.

And they can accelerate more smoothly than the heavier ones.

Camera

All drones don’t come with a camera. In case you want to purchase a drone as a flying machine, you won’t need a camera.

But if you intend to use it for videography or shooting photographs, a quality 1080 HD camera is a minimum requirement.

Brushless motors

Though the brushless motors are slightly more expensive than the brushed ones yet they offer a longer lifespan which means the owner doesn’t require replacing the motors too often.

Headless mode

For beginners, it might be tricky to fly a drone initially. Therefore there are few models that offer the headless mode.

In this mode, as you press the controller stick in a definite direction, the drone will fly in that direction and not to the direction where the joystick points.

Integrated GPS

When you choose from the premium drones, you’ll come across models with integrated that allows the machines to stay informed about the geographical location of the drone.

Thanks to this, your drone will find its way to home and hence this feature is named RTH (return-to-home).

Follow-me mode

There are few GPS enabled drones that offer the follow-me-mode that allows the owner to track the device across the ocean or ground.

So, if you’re off to a trek or mountain biking, you can let your drone fly above you and record some of the best videos of your adventure.

Gimbal

A gimbal ensures your drone can remain steady while it is flying through high altitudes and high winds. This is a must for drones for outdoor flying.

Obstacle avoidance

Although this feature can add to the cost of the device but it’s worth the cost as it can prevent the device from crashing into a tree.

However, ensure this works reliably as advertised by the drone manufacturer before buying.

Spare part availability

Drones can break and hence you have to check whether or not you will have access to its spare parts either through a neighbourhood store or an online store.

However, unlike regular drones costs can stack up quickly when you go in for FPV drones.

Essential features to look for in a drone

The price of the drone won’t be a proper indicator of the quality of the machine though it will give you an approximate evaluation of which drones are better than others.

To make an informed decision, you have to be aware of the specs. Here are few features to watch out for.

Battery life

Just as a smartphone runs out of battery, a drone will also run out of juice. If you choose the best models, the maximum flight time in between charges hardly exceed 30 minutes.

While you can always carry extra batteries, don’t forget to factor in the cost of spare batteries when calculating the total cost.

Range of flight

The range of flight usually ranges from 30 metres/100 feet to one kilometer or even more.

The quadcopters that are meant for beginners usually come with a short range and it perfectly suits the novices who just wish to use it inside an apartment or an enclosed place.

Flight Time

Majority of the models come with a flight time that ranges between 10-15 minutes - though there are a few expensive versions that can fly for 25 minutes or more - after which you require either replacing your batteries or recharging them.

So battery life is one feature that you may want to keep a close eye on as you may have to charge the battery for over an hour or thereabouts.

The costlier models may offer over 15 minutes of flight time. In case you have a requirement of longer flying time, for say aerial photography, you may want to go in for a more expensive camera drone and/or buy a additional battery.

Speed

In the features of a quadcopter, it is most unlikely that you’ll get maximum speed of flight but in case you can settle with light-weight models that don’t have too many accessories.

They can accelerate more smoothly than the heavier ones.

Hence, you have to choose between speed and added equipments.

Number of blades

The most user-friendly and the most popular ones are those models which come with 4 blades but you can even get models with 2, 3, 6 and also 8 blades.

Decide the power that you would need so that you can choose the number of blades.

Meanwhile, you can’t forget that the more powerful your drone is, the sooner its battery will get discharged.

Gyroscope

All drones don’t come with gyroscopes that are sensors that let the drone fly effortlessly.

In a stormy weather, a drone with a gyroscope will stay put while one without a gyroscope may fall and crash.

Average size

Are you buying a drone for your children? If yes, get them a mini drone or one of the toy drones.

For beginners or amateur shooters, medium sized devices will be perfect. In case of professional purpose, get a larger drone.

Camera

All drones don’t come with a camera. In case you want to purchase a drone as a flying machine, you won’t need a camera.

But if you intend to shoot photos or videos, a drone with camera is a must. However, depending on your requirement, do check the camera quality before you buy one of the camera drones.

Brushless motors

While you go through the list, you will definitely come across the term brushless motors.

Thanks to this upgrade, your drone will find its way to home and hence this feature is named RTH (return-to-home).

Follow-me mode

There are few GPS enabled drones that offer the follow-me-mode that allows the owner to track the device across the ocean or ground.

So, if you’re off to a trek or mountain biking, you can let your drone fly above you and record some of the best videos of your adventure.

Gimbal

Have you seen a drone with integrated gimbal?

Thanks to this feature that your drone can remain steady while it is flying through high altitudes and high winds.

Drones that are flown indoors don’t really need this feature but if you’re buying a drone for outdoor, ensure having a gimbal feature.

Obstacle avoidance

One more necessary feature of the premium drones is obstacle avoidance.

Although this feature can add to the cost of the device but it’s worth the cost as it can prevent the device from crashing into a tree.

Don’t forget to go through the reviews to check whether or not this feature works as advertised.

Spare part availability

Drones can break and hence you have to check whether or not the spare parts are available before choosing a drone.

What to know before buying a drone

For someone who’s new into the market, buying a drone can be a daunting task.

Once you visit the online e-commerce sites, you’ll be bombarded with jargons and technical terms that you won’t know of.

Here are the few things that you should be familiar with before purchasing a drone.

Understanding the acronyms

There are several acronyms that you’ll come across while buying a drone and you have to know what they mean.

RTF is the full form of ready-to-fly and in these cases, you will have to tie the controller, install the propeller to make the drone ready to fly.

BNF means bind-to-fly drones which are totally assembled and they come without controllers.

ARF means almost-ready-to-fly and this is when you buy a drone kit. They have receivers and transmitters. Many even come without flight controllers, motors, batteries and electronic speed controls.

FPV means First-Person Video and these drones can stream footage from the perspective of a person.

You may need a registration for owning a drone

Did you know that the FAA or the Federal Aviation Administration deems drones as UAS or Unmanned Aircraft Systems and demands all UAVs weighing above 0.55 pounds to be registered?

The cost attached to registration is $5 per aircraft and this remains valid for 3 long years.

The Unique Identification Number that you receive post registration has to be attached to your drone. The minimum age for owning a drone is 13 years.

Controlling a drone is impossible without a perfect hand-held device

There are several drones that are controlled with the help of smartphone devices instead of controllers.

Unless you own an outdated mobile, this is certainly a better option.

The software of drone will usually work with new smartphones with the latest OS.

Hence you need to check the specifications of the drone before buying it. You may choose to upgrade your phone in case it is necessary.

The manufacturers usually claim that their drones can be flown easily but their claims are sometimes too good to be true.

Whether or not the flight of the drone will be smooth will depend on the internal mechanism and the flight controller.

Those that are designed for precise flying will demand manual controls and these aren’t good for beginners.

The ones that promise maximum stability are better for beginners as they can stay put in the air without too many controls from your end.

Certain flying conditions can have an adverse impact on your drone

Don’t get too cocky while flying your drone as there are certain poor weather or flight conditions which can cause harm to your drone or even make you lose it.

Clear sunny sky with no breeze is usually considered a perfect condition for flying drones. A gush of wind can make you lose control.

Pay attention to the guidelines for flying

In the year 1981, the FAA rolled out few guidelines for running such a drone aircraft.

As the advice was given ages ago, these rules can still be enforced.

Ensure that you can have a view of your drone all time and stay clear of the position of the drone and don’t fly above unprotected people or vehicles.

Get in touch with the control tower before you fly the drone within 5 miles of a heliport or an airport.

Don’t fly in tough weather conditions and don’t fly it when you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Know about the etiquette of flying drones

If you choose to fly your drone in urban or other residential areas, this needs to be done with extreme caution.

There are several laypersons who are overly concerned about the privacy implications of drones and hence they might end up creating a fuss about it.

So, when you operate your drone, stick to open fields, avoid places where there are houses, schools, churches, stadiums, prisons, power stations or busy roads.

Fields and public parks are undoubtedly the best option for flying your UAV.
